Halloween Party 80s Video Dance Attack @ Crystal Ballroom

80s Video Dance Attack
The 4th Annual 80s Video Dance Attack Halloween Party! Hosted by McMenamins Crystal Ballroom this spooky 80s extravaganza is the perfect way to celebrate the scariest holiday of the year! All your favorite 80s hits plus plenty of Halloween themed videos! Our supersized holiday setup plus tons of surprises as well.
Before it mutated into a weaponized haze of reality shows, MTV aired a novelty known as the music video. These bite-sized works of art, which married pop songs to striking imagery, revolutionized the entertainment industry and ushered in an era of music known as “new wave.” For the task of curating and introducing these fresh sounds and flamboyant sights to audiences, MTV even created its own version of the disc jockey—the VJ.
Though MTV has sent its stable of video jockeys out to pasture, VJ Kittyrox carries the pastel, shoulder-padded torch of Adam Curry and Nina Blackwood as she masterminds the 80s Video Dance Attack. For the last seven years, this popular shindig has united generations of Portlandians with its five-hour feast of ’80s-centric sensation. Across 10-foot screens, VJ Kittyrox projects classic videos from artists such as Duran Duran and Michael Jackson as audiences of Breakfast Clubbers and Pretty in Pinkers perfect their cabbage patch, running man, and Pat Benatar shimmies. A bombastic, thumping sound system and a dazzling light show accentuate the time warp as audiences deck themselves in ’80s garb and shake away memories of unsolved rubik’s cubes.

Adults Only! Portland Halloween Walking Tour of Portland’s Sinful Past

Portland's Sinful Past Walking Tour
As a nexus for labor and shipping in the Pacific Northwest, Portland often had the repute of a rugged, rough and tumble town, more than willing to allow the miners, loggers, and fishermen an opportunity to part with their hard earned cash in whatever debaucherous manner they chose.

In addition to the shanghaiers and con men, always on the prowl, saloons, gambling halls and bordellos also thrived in “Whitechapel,” “The North End,” or Old Town, as we know it today. Some of these storied establishments have come and gone, but others have survived, and many say that Portland, or “Strip City,” still has that vulgar and rugged reputation to this day.

Join Historian Doug Kenck-Crispin as we visit locations of famous saloons, bars and bordellos, card rooms and gambling dens, some of which are still in operation today! The tour will meet at Thirsty Lion Pub. Feel free to stop by early for a pint and grub! The tour will “end” outside of Mary’s Club, one of Portland’s most hallowed strip clubs*. At the conclusion of the tour, you can join Doug inside for an adult beverage!

Doug Kenck-Crispin is the Ribald Resident Historian from www.orhistory.com. He is the co-producer of the bi-weekly podcast series Kick Ass Oregon History. Doug has been featured in the Portland Mercury, The Oregonian, Portland Monthly and OPB’s Oregon Experience. He has a BA in History, and is nearing completion of his MA in Public History, with an emphasis on the History of the Pacific Northwest (Portland State University). A lifelong resident of the region, Doug enjoys a good yarn, the more bizarre and unbecoming the better, especially when they are true!

Portland 2014 Halloween Theater: The Reformers Present The Turn

The Reformers Present The Turn
A remote estate. A new caretaker. A classic ghost story re-imagined.
The Reformers are thrilled to announce their upcoming fall production The Turn, their thrilling adaptation of Henry James’ classic ghost story Turn of the Screw.
The Turn is the tale of a woman hired to look after an orphan girl residing with a housekeeper in a lonely mansion. Two ghosts appear, and a struggle for the very lives of the children she is entrusted to protect, begins. Playing upon the similarities of the stories, the company will blend the play with elements of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
Similar to last year’s successful thriller The Revenants, the play will take place in a home. The Reformers gave their audiences a terrifying good time last year and look forward to doing it again.
