Circus Zirkus!

Circus Zirkus will be featured at Portland Children’s Museum from January 31-May 31, 2015. Come one, come all to Portland Children’s Museum, where our newest exhibit takes visitors on a whimsical trip to the circus. Step right up and join the excitement in this hands-on, all abilities and ages exhibit. Children and families can experience the thrills of the circus through silly costumes, playful props, and exciting stunts.

Circus Zirkus is staged into two main areas, the front of house performance area and backstage practice area. This vibrant and playful exhibit will encourage children to test new abilities, practice physical skills, and build self-confidence. Here’s a sampling of what you’ll see:

The Three Ring Stage — Get on the mega phone and announce the upcoming performance. Dazzle the audience with great strength with the barbell or nimble balance on the suspended ladder.

Concession Carts — No circus experience is complete without snacks. Children can hawk faux “hot dogs,” “cotton candy,” and “ice cream” to friends and family.

The Backstage — Practice on the trapeze, spin inside a giant hoop, and walk across the tightrope before stepping on stage to perform.

Costumes & Props — Outfit yourself in extra large clown pants, spin plates, or practice juggling with scarves.

These are just some of the highlights that make Circus Zirkus a must-see experience for all ages, and fun for the whole family.

CIRCUS ZIRKUS is on view January 31-May 31, 2015 in Purple Turtle Hall.

Favell Finley Exhibit
The Favell Museum will host  Put A Bird On It: Nature Photography of William L. Finley, a traveling exhibition celebrating Finley, a nationally known bird photographer, naturalist, and advocate for wildlife preservation. This exhibit provides a stunning and unique glimpse through his lens. Finley, the “Father of Oregon’s National Wildlife Refuges,” helped set up Oregon’s federal wildlife refuge system. If not for Finley, the great marshes of Klamath, Tule and Malheur might have been lost forever. Featuring forty of Finley’s bird photographs (1902 –1920), these photographs are considered to be of the very best quality for the era.

Formal Exhibit Opening – Sunday, February 15, 2015

10 am to 5 pm • Free Admission to all on February 15th

Steve Rooker, Interpretive Park Ranger, Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex will be at the museum to provide information and answer questions about the legacy and career of William L. Finley.

PUT A BIRD ON IT was created by the Washington County Museum and is traveling to Klamath Falls as a part of the annual Winter Wings Festival.

Janann Loetscher, Executive Director of the Favell Museum, says: “We are excited to feature such a large amount of Finley’s bird photographs. They are truly outstanding and give you such an appreciation for our place here in the Pacific Flyway. This exhibit is a great kick off for the Winter Wings Festival, but will be available for viewing through April. Don’t miss it!”

Art Gallery Exhibit
For the month of February, the Klamath Art Association and Gallery will host its annual invitational exhibition “In Celebration of Birds,” in conjunction with the Winter Wings Festival. Artists and photographers from all over the region have been invited to participate. Visitors can expect to see images depicting North American native bird life in a wide variety of media and styles. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs will amaze and delight. In addition, there may be a display “creative” hand made bird houses. The show will open with a public reception for the artists on Sunday February 1st from noon to 4 pm. People’s Choice awards will be awarded based on votes from people attending the opening.   The exhibit will continue until Sunday February 22nd.

The Klamath Art Gallery is located in historic Maple Park at 120 Riverside Drive, across from the Favell Museum. It is on the south end of the Link River birding trail. The gallery is open Thursdays through Mondays from noon to 4 PM. For additional information about the historic Klamath Art Association and Gallery phone 541-883-1833 during business hours.  Admission is always FREE!

Science on Tap - Cascadia Earthquake

Science on Tap is a science lecture series where you can sit back, enjoy a pint, and laugh while you learn. Listen to experts talk about the science in your neighborhood and around the world. You don’t have to be a science geek to have fun—all you need is a thirst for knowledge!

While we can’t predict exactly when the next Great Cascadia Earthquake will happen, we CAN forecast the probabilities from a long history of past earthquakes. At this Science on Tap, Chris Goldfinger, PhD, professor of geology and geophysics at Oregon State University, will talk about the geology of Cascadia and his research on the recurrence interval of major earthquakes.

Pesto Veggie Gyro

This would have to be my most favorite recipe! It's delicious, healthy and fun to make. Remember, you can replace the veggies with any veggies your own kids love to eat!

Ingredients
1 cup packed fresh basil leaves
3/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese (1 ounce)
2 tablespoons pine nuts or chopped walnuts
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
2 cloves garlic
1  Salt
1  Ground black pepper
1 pound zucchini or yellow summer squash, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
2 medium red sweet peppers, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed
2 8 ounce packages Halloumi cheese, cut into 1/3-inch-thick slices
6 8 inches flatbreads
1  Olive oil
3 cups shredded romaine lettuce
1 cup finely chopped red onion (1 large)

Directions
  1. For pesto vinaigrette, in a food processor or blender combine basil, 1/2 cup of the oil, the Parmesan cheese, nuts, vinegar, and garlic. Cover and process or blend until smooth. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Cover and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl toss together squash, sweet peppers, the remaining 1/4 cup oil, and oregano. Thread vegetables onto 12-inch skewers,* alternating squash and pepper pieces.
  3. For a gas or charcoal grill, place skewers on the rack of a covered grill directly over medium heat. Grill for 12 minutes or until tender, turning once halfway through grilling. Meanwhile, lightly brush cheese slices and flatbreads with the additional olive oil. Place on grill rack; cover and grill about 2 minutes or until heated through and cheese is golden brown, turning once halfway through grilling.
  4. Fold flatbreads in half. Fill each with 1/2 cup of the lettuce, two grilled cheese slices, and the vegetables from one skewer. Top each with some of the onion and drizzle with some of the pesto vinaigrette.

Helpful Advice!
If using wooden skewers, soak in water for at least 30 minutes before grilling.
