Exhibition of Japanese Calligraphy: “The Way of The Brush”

The Garden looks forward to hosting an exhibition of fine calligraphy by Master Yoshiyasu Fujii of Tokyo and the Meito Shodo Kai, a non-profit organization established in 1996 by students of the Akashi USA calligraphy schools, the largest Japanese calligraphy association in the United States with over one hundred members. Many of those whose work is represented in this exhibition have received top awards at prestigious calligraphy competitions in Japan and the US. The purpose of the group is to promote the tradition of Japanese calligraphy in the US through education and exhibition.

This event is perfect for those out there with older children interested in the arts. Besides walking around and enjoying the garden and watching this man create such wonderful art, your child can learn about another culture and their values.

Fujii Sensei began the study of calligraphy at the age of five in his childhood home of Saga, Japan. He studied under Master Calligrapher Shumpo Akashi, with whom he would continue to study until Akashi’s death in 1995. While studying with Akashi, Fujii studied sumi-e painting and pursued his interest in the history, not only of Japanese calligraphy, but of Chinese classical calligraphy in addition to all of the traditional calligraphy writing styles. Fujii is the recipient of many honors, including the top award at Mainichi Calligraphy Competition, Japan’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious calligraphy competition, in 1990 and 1992. He has served as assistant judge at the Mainichi Calligraphy Competition and is the only calligraphy instructor in the US licensed by the Japanese Ministry of Education.

Event held on Sunday at 1 pm in the Pavilion Gallery- Included with Garden admission
